Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’: The golden ribbon of shade gardens
The Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’, also called golden Japanese forest grass, is an incomparably elegant perennial grass, prized for its luminous foliage and silky texture. Its delicate, drooping, brilliant golden-yellow leaves bring a touch of light and refinement to shady areas of the garden. Supple, fluid, and graphic, this variety is a jewel for modern beds, borders, or planters.
A fluid and luminous grass
Hakonechloa ‘All Gold’ forms a rounded and drooping clump, reaching 30 to 40 cm in height and 40 to 50 cm in spread. Its intense golden yellow foliage, sometimes tinged with light green in partial shade, creates magnificent cascades of color that animate the garden with the wind. In summer, small airy inflorescences appear above the foliage, adding to its delicate charm. Ideal for brightening a shade bed, outlining a border, or creating a silky effect in a pot.
Cultivation and care
Easy to grow, Hakonechloa ‘All Gold’ prefers partial shade or even full shade, where its color remains vibrant and bright. It tolerates full sun if the soil remains moist. Plant it in light, humus-rich, fresh, and well-drained soil. Water regularly during hot periods to prevent the leaves from drying out. In late winter, cut the clump back to a few centimeters from the ground to stimulate spring regrowth. Very hardy, it tolerates cold down to -20 °C.
