Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola': Japanese elegance with golden and green hues
The Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, also known as Variegated Japanese Forest Grass, is an exceptionally graceful perennial grass, renowned for its finely variegated foliage in golden yellow and soft green. Originating from the Japanese mountains, it brings a refined, zen, and luminous touch to the garden, ideal for softening shaded or partially shaded areas.
A fluid, graphic, and colorful grass
Hakonechloa ‘Aureola’ forms a supple, slightly arched clump, reaching 30 to 40 cm in height and approximately 40 to 50 cm in width. Its long, ribbon-like golden-yellow leaves are delicately streaked with green, creating a unique effect of movement and light. In summer, small, light beige feathery inflorescences discreetly appear, adding a touch of lightness to its elegant habit. Perfect for borders, shade beds, or pots, it brings a silky and luminous texture to the garden.
Cultivation and care
Very easy to cultivate, Hakonechloa ‘Aureola’ thrives in partial shade or bright shade, in cool, rich, and well-drained soil. It tolerates full sun if the soil remains moist. Its foliage retains its most beautiful colors in partial shade, where the yellow and green contrast is more intense. In late winter, cut back the clumps to 5-10 cm from the ground to encourage strong spring regrowth. Very hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to -25 °C.
