Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens': The Autumn Flame with Purple Hues

The Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens', also known as purple elephant grass, is a majestic perennial grass renowned for its changing and flamboyant hues. From the soft green of spring to the coppery and purplish reds of autumn, this variety offers a striking seasonal display. Flamboyant foliage and a light silhouette

'Purpurascens' forms a dense and upright clump, reaching 1.2 to 1.5 m in height (up to 1.8 m in bloom), and about 80 to 100 cm in width.
Its narrow, medium-green leaves take on orange-red and coppery shades from late summer, before turning a flamboyant purplish red in autumn, then golden beige in winter.
From July to September, it is adorned with silky silver panicles with pinkish reflections, which dominate the foliage and beautifully capture the sunlight.

Cultivation and care

Very hardy (down to -25 °C) and low-maintenance, Miscanthus 'Purpurascens' is easily grown in full sun, in ordinary to rich, fresh but well-drained soil. It also tolerates slightly dry soils once established.
Cut back the clump to 10 cm from the ground in late winter, before the appearance of new leaves. In autumn, let the culms dry in place: they structure the garden and protect the crown from the cold.
