Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus': Variegated elegance in motion

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’, or variegated Chinese silvergrass, is a majestic and luminous perennial grass, renowned for its light green foliage striped with creamy white. With its flexible, cascading habit, it brings a touch of freshness and lightness to beds, borders, or contemporary settings. Elegant, structural, and very robust, it offers a remarkable contrast in natural or modern gardens.

A flexible and luminous silhouette

'Variegatus' forms a large, arching, graceful clump, reaching 1.5 to 1.8 m in height (up to 2 m when in flower) and approximately 1 m in width.
Its ribbon-like light green foliage variegated with creamy white elegantly sways in the wind and captures light throughout the day. In summer, it is topped with silky, silvery to pinkish panicles, light and airy, which gracefully sway above the foliage.
In autumn, the plant takes on warmer tones, then transforms into a golden clump that remains decorative all winter.

Cultivation and care

Easy to grow and hardy (down to -25 °C), Miscanthus 'Variegatus' adapts to most soils as long as they are well-drained and slightly moist. It prefers a full sun exposure, but tolerates partial shade.
Cut back the clump to 10-15 cm from the ground in late winter, before new growth begins. This grass appreciates rich soil and regular watering in the first few years, then becomes self-sufficient once well established.
